Jose Menendez
Visual artist whose work explores the complexities of space, perception, and identity. At the heart of his practice is an understanding of space not only as a physical construct, but as an experiential realm meant to be inhabited. His ability to feel space emerges in immersive installations, glass sculptures, and paintings where perception intertwines with memory and self. Through these works, he invites the viewer to reconsider their relationship with the world, blurring the lines between the tangible and intangible in spaces of reflection.
Born in Morocco, raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and currently based in New York, Menéndez began his studies in architecture, which provided a deep foundation in spatial thinking—later fused with his artistic vision. After earning his BFA in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt), he became deeply engaged with glass as a medium, both as a maker and as an educator in New York.
A recurring thread throughout Menéndez’s work is his strong connection to the Caribbean. His ongoing documentation of the region and participation in independent audiovisual projects are rooted in a search for identity, memory, and space. This exploration anchors his creative practice, inspiring works that invite reflection on how individuals relate to—and are shaped by—the environments they inhabit.
